Evolution Makes You Fat

News flash -- next time something you don't like "happens" to you, blame it on science:

Evolution and the environment, not just gluttony, has led to a global obesity pandemic, with an estimated 1.5 billion people overweight -- more than the number of undernourished people -- an obesity conference was told on Monday.
It really makes perfect sense when you think about it. It can't be my fault. And yet no one made me eat. Therefore, I shall blame both my parents and evolution. Problem solved.

Dietary supplements and alternative treatments promising weight loss have minimal or no effect because they cannot match evolutionary influences that cause the body to conserve energy in times of famine, Dr Anne-Thea McGill told the conference.

Right. Our bodies are programmed to store fat when we've got extra food, and save energy when we are hungry. And this is to blame for people being fat?

What ever happened to "eat right, exercise"? Instead of blaming the ineffectiveness of dietary suppliments and "herbal remedies," why don't we address the real issue here? People eat too much and don't work out enough. They're self-indulgent and whiny, and refuse to be proactive about their own health.

By and large (pun intended), if you're fat these days its your own fault. There, I said it.
